As part of its efforts to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) advancements, Google is reorganizing its AI teams under the Google DeepMind division. This move further consolidates the company’s AI research and development to streamline innovation across its platforms, services, and tools.

Key Changes in AI Team Organization
On Thursday, Logan Kilpatrick, who leads product development for Google’s AI Studio, announced that the AI Studio team and the team responsible for the API of the Gemini series of AI models will transition to Google DeepMind.
Google DeepMind was established in 2023 through the merger of DeepMind and Google Brain, the latter being a part of Google Research. Since its formation, DeepMind has spearheaded numerous AI initiatives, including Gemini, Google’s flagship series of AI models.
Kilpatrick highlighted the significance of the restructuring in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“This move will allow us to double down on our already deep collaboration and accelerate the research-to-developer pipeline. The mission for our team stays the same.”
Jaana Dogan, an engineer from one of the transitioning teams, also expressed enthusiasm for the shift, noting that it would facilitate greater public availability of DeepMind’s work. “Better APIs, more open source, more tools… [this is] just a very small percentage of what’s coming next,” she wrote.
Google’s latest reorganization follows a similar move earlier this year when the team behind its Gemini-powered chatbot was integrated into DeepMind. This chatbot is a centerpiece of Google’s AI efforts, leveraging the capabilities of the Gemini models to deliver cutting-edge conversational AI.
During a December 2024 all-hands meeting, Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the importance of accelerating Gemini’s deployment and development. According to audio obtained by CNBC, Pichai noted:
“Scaling Gemini on the consumer side will be our biggest focus [in 2025]. I think it’s really important we internalize the urgency of this moment, and [the] need to move faster as a company. The stakes are high.”
