All Google Gemini users can now access Gemini Gems for free, offering a more personalized chatbot experience without the need for a subscription.

Google provides five premade Gems that users can interact with: Brainstormer, Career Guide, Coding Partner, Learning Coach, and Writing Editor. For those seeking more control, users can also create their own custom Gems through a simple setup process. By using Google’s intuitive instructions box, you can tell Gemini what you want the Gem to do and specify the parameters, and Gemini will generate the Gem according to those instructions.

Gems are available for all users aged 18 and above and can be accessed on the web, as well as through Gemini’s Android and iOS apps. However, creating new Gems can only be done via gemini.google.com. Once there, you can find the Gem manager in the account menu on mobile or in the side panel on the web version.
This is not the only recent update from Gemini. Google Sheets has also received a major AI-powered upgrade, using Gemini to analyze data more quickly and uncover correlations, trends, outliers, and other insights. Additionally, Gemini can automatically convert spreadsheet data into charts for easier visualization.
Paid users have more features to look forward to as well, as Gemini 2.5 was recently unveiled. Google claims that this new model brings enhanced reasoning abilities, coding proficiency, and multimodal functionalities, as well as the ability to analyze complex data, consider contextual nuances, and draw logical conclusions with unmatched precision.

While Gemini’s ability to allow users to create more specialized chatbots is a welcome development, it comes a little late compared to ChatGPT, which offered free users the option to build custom GPTs almost a year ago. However, it’s worth noting that ChatGPT requires a subscription to create custom GPTs, giving Gemini’s free customizable Gems an edge, despite the limitation that new Gems can only be created via a browser.
