PlayStation Move Controllers: Compatibility Across PS3, PS4, and PS5

The PlayStation Move controllers, originally released in 2010 for the PlayStation 3, were designed to provide a motion-controlled gaming experience similar to the Wii Remote. Since then, these controllers have evolved to remain compatible with later PlayStation consoles, including the PS4 and PS5. However, their functionality and compatibility vary depending on the console.

PS3 Move Controllers on PS4

Although the PlayStation Move controllers for PS3 and PS4 look similar, there are notable differences in their hardware, particularly when it comes to the USB port. The PS3 Move controllers feature a mini-USB charging port, while the PS4 version has a micro-USB port. Despite this, you can still use the PS3 Move controllers on the PS4. To do so, you need a mini-USB to USB cable for pairing and charging. Once connected, simply press the PS button on the controller to complete the pairing process. These controllers work perfectly with PlayStation VR on the PS4, allowing you to enjoy titles like Rec Room and Concrete Genie.

PS4 Move Controllers on PS3

While it’s possible to use PS3 Move controllers on the PS4, the reverse is not true. The PS4 Move controllers, which are equipped with micro-USB charging ports, cannot be used with the PS3. Even though their appearance might suggest compatibility, the micro-USB ports prevent them from pairing with the older console. Therefore, PS4 Move controllers are incompatible with the PS3, and you’ll need the PS3 versions if you want to play on that system.

PS Move Controllers on PS5

When it comes to the PS5, the PlayStation Move controllers retain their compatibility, especially when paired with PlayStation VR. To use the controllers on the PS5, connect them via a mini-USB cable and press the PS button to pair them. These controllers work seamlessly with PS VR on the PS5, allowing for an immersive virtual reality experience. However, it’s important to note that the PS5 does not support PS3 games, so even if you manage to connect a PS3 Move controller, it will not function with PS3 titles on the PS5.

Important Considerations

  • Controller Version Identification: Check the USB port type on your PlayStation Move controllers to ensure they are compatible with your console. The mini-USB port is found on PS3 controllers, while the micro-USB port is used by PS4 controllers.
  • Re-pairing Process: If you switch between consoles, you may need to re-pair the controllers each time. The pairing process can differ based on the console you’re using.
  • Functionality Limitations: Certain features on newer controllers may not be available on older models. Similarly, PS4 and PS5 might support features not found on PS3 versions of the controllers.
