Samsung Partners with Nexon to Bring Glasses-Free 3D Gaming to Life

While 3D cinema was once hailed as the future of immersive entertainment, its widespread promise never fully materialized, despite a few successful exceptions. On the other hand, the concept of glasses-free 3D gaming has remained a tantalizing possibility, one that various manufacturers have explored over the years. Now, Samsung has announced an exciting partnership with Nexon Korea and Neople to deliver an unparalleled 3D experience in the upcoming game, The First Berserker: Khazan. This collaboration aims to bring immersive 3D gaming to life without the need for cumbersome 3D glasses.

Revolutionizing 3D Gaming Without Glasses

At CES 2024Samsung unveiled the Odyssey 3D monitor, a groundbreaking piece of technology designed to create a glasses-free 3D effect. This monitor utilizes a combination of a front-mounted lenticular lensstereo cameraseye-tracking, and light field display technology to generate depth perception by projecting light at different angles towards your eyes. The result? A true 3D experience that tricks your brain into perceiving artificial depth without the need for glasses or VR headsets.

Unlike traditional 3D monitors, which rely on polarized glasses or VR headsets, Samsung’s Odyssey 3D display brings the promise of a more natural and seamless 3D gaming experience. As long as you’re within the viewing angle, the screen generates depth, enhancing the visual experience of the content you’re watching or playing.

Samsung, along with Nexon and Neople, plans to tailor specific scenarios within the game to maximize the 3D effect. This includes adjusting the focal distance to enhance dramatic scenes, such as epic boss battles and cinematic cutscenes, while minimizing common issues like visual crosstalk (the overlapping of images in 3D) to deliver crisp, clear visuals.

With the Odyssey 3D monitor, the game’s immersive visuals will be much more engaging, offering depth and realism without the need for any special eyewear. Players will be able to experience the action as if they were part of the game world, with a level of immersion previously reserved for VR headsets.

Currently, the monitor can convert 2D video into 3D content, but the feature is still limited to full-screen videos viewed through a web browser. Custom-tailored content, such as games optimized for this 3D technology, is expected to follow soon.

If they succeed in refining the technology, it could be the next logical evolution for immersive gaming. The possibility of enjoying 3D experiences without the need for heavy, uncomfortable equipment could finally give this long-forgotten concept the mainstream success it’s been striving for.
