How to Enable Advanced Data Protection for iCloud Backups

Apple’s Advanced Data Protection provides end-to-end encryption for iCloud backups, ensuring that only you can access your data—even Apple does not hold the encryption keys. While setting it up requires a few extra steps, the added security and privacy benefits make it well worth the effort.

To enable Advanced Data Protection, your devices must be running iOS 16.2 (released in December 2022) or later. Below is a step-by-step guide to securing your iCloud backups.

Step 1: Prepare Your Apple Devices

Before enabling Advanced Data Protection, all Apple devices linked to your iCloud account must be updated to the latest software versions:

  • iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches must support at least iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, and watchOS 9.2.
  • Apple TVs and HomePods using your iCloud account must also be updated.
  • If any devices cannot be updated, they must be removed from your Apple ID in Settings.

Once your devices are up to date, you can proceed to set up Account Recovery.

Step 2: Set Up Account Recovery

Since Apple will no longer have access to your iCloud backup encryption keys, setting up Account Recovery is essential in case you lose access to your account.

  1. Go to Settings > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection.
  2. Tap Account Recovery to set it up (or proceed directly to Advanced Data Protection, where recovery setup will be included).
  3. Choose a recovery method:
    • Recovery Contact: Select a trusted person with an Apple device who can help you regain access if needed.
      • message request will be sent to your contact for approval.
      • You’ll receive a notification once they accept.
    • Recovery Key: Generate a 28-character recovery key and store it safely (written down or in a password manager).
      • You will need to verify the key during setup.

Once Account Recovery is enabled, you can proceed to turn on Advanced Data Protection.

Step 3: Enable Advanced Data Protection

  1. Go to Settings > iCloud > Advanced Data Protection.
  2. Ensure all devices tied to your Apple ID are updated or removed.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.

Once enabled, your iCloud backups, including messages, photos, and other sensitive data, will be protected with end-to-end encryption, significantly enhancing your digital privacy.
